The biggest hidden fee on most platforms is the guest service fee — often 12–18% of the booking subtotal — added at checkout. Some platforms also bake an unmarked commission into the nightly rate, so even when no service fee shows, you may still be paying for it.
Resort fees are most common in the US and parts of the Caribbean. They cover Wi-Fi, pool access or other amenities and are charged at the property, not at booking. Always read the fine print before assuming the price you see is final.
Cleaning fees are legitimate, but they hit short stays disproportionately. A €60 cleaning fee on a 7-night stay adds about €8.50 per night; on a 2-night stay it adds €30. Filter or sort by total trip cost, not nightly rate, to compare like-for-like.
Currency conversion is another silent surcharge. If your card or platform converts in their margin, you can lose 2–4% on top of the official rate. Pay in the property's local currency when possible.
